Who Is God? Introduction | Who Created God? If you encounter any problems or broken links, please excuse and come back later.] Introduction | What Does the Bible Say? | Summary
Introduction The fact is that we cannot define God, as far as a definition goes, because we cannot truly fathom all that God is and encompasses. What we can try to do is explain what God is to each of us from our own perspective. In this lesson, we will discuss some of the answers; but certainly, this is not a discussion to end all questions. Rather, it is a discussion to only begin to answer the question and hopefully, to draw each of us into a more intimate relationship with this Person we call "God". Of course, the question "Who is God?" immediately denotes an understanding that He is a Person, not a "what". He is Someone, not something. Why Does It Matter? What Does the Bible Say? The Bible never attempts to prove the existence of God; rather, it assumes His existence from the very beginning (cf. Genesis 1:1). However, the Bible does reveal the nature, character, and work of God. We know certain things to be true of God because He has graciously revealed some of His qualities, character, and works to us through His Word. Now, let's go to God's Word to discover more about its divine Author.
"They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness." (Psalm 145:7) "Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?" (Romans 2:4) See also Romans 11:22. "Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!" (Revelation 7:12 NIV) "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence..." (2 Peter 1:3) See also Ephesians 1 thru 3. He can have nothing to do with sin. In fact, He cannot even look on evil. "You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong..." (Habakkuk 1:13a) "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day." (John 6:44) "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation 1:8) "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty." (Psalm 91:1) "...I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty." (2 Corinthians 6:18) See also Genesis 17:1. "Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?" (Isaiah 40:12) "For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of." (Deuteronomy 4:32) "Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing." (Isaiah 40:26) "Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it..."
